There are some shots that I make that I really need the final result to be good and this is one of them. There are a couple of reasons I needed this one to work out. First of all you cant get the milky way in this spot all year. The core of the galaxy will be more on the southwest in October and then it vanishes only to reappear at this spot a year later. Second is the fact that night shots take particularly long to do properly in the field. Some of them end up not being as good as I planned. This one I waited 3 hours without really moving and making sure every element in the scene was to my liking and I had to think of the changes ahead of time in the lighting. We also had to hike back in the total darkness of night in a 3.5km somewhat narrow trail. On this trail 2 years ago, we had a close encounter with a male and female moose in the rutting season. This trail was closed down the next day because of this incident. In case you did not know, many of these shots push me out of my comfort zone. I am getting better at this, but there is something about being in the dark and far away from safety that is slightly nerve wrecking. My imagination runs wild sometimes and I have to forcefully think of happy places. On this hike, I wasn’t alone although. My pregnant wife was by my side, patiently awaiting for me to photograph the night sky. I look at this image and it reminds me how lucky I am to have such a supporting wife who waits around for me lots of the time.
